Canny vs Productboard vs UserVoice
Which feedback gets prioritized?.
Choose Canny if a visible idea board and customer voting should feed an internal roadmap. Choose Productboard if feedback triage and explicit strategic scoring are the harder parts of the job. Choose UserVoice if grouping themes and weighing requests by account or retention context matter most. All three describe ways to bring customer evidence into product decisions, but they expose different controls for intake, ranking and follow-up. 1 1 4 5 9 9

3 feedback workflows side by side
| Canny | Productboard | UserVoice | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Intake | Customer board with ideas and votes; Salesforce users can search or create posts. 1 3 | Central repository, triage and links from insights to features. 4 4 | Centralized feedback and customer context with theme detection. 8 9 |
| Ranking | Custom scores can weigh revenue and demand against effort. 2 | Customer importance, weighted strategic drivers and value-effort matrix. 4 5 5 | Revenue, retention and customer demand signals; account-level analysis. 9 9 |
| CRM context | Opportunity links and ARR, opportunity value and churn-risk views. 2 3 | Salesforce account and opportunity sync for segmentation and deal context. 6 | Salesforce account revenue field can inform account valuation; the connector is labeled Discovery Premium in UserVoice help. 10 10 |
| Closing the loop | Voters can receive automatic status notices. 1 | Portal updates can reach requesters and linked insight submitters. 7 | Supporters can receive an emailed status update; the web portal can display it. UserVoice help labels this Discovery Pro and Premium. 11 11 11 |
This matrix maps documented vendor functions, not an effectiveness ranking. Run the same sample requests through each system before choosing. Include a common request, a request from a strategic account, and a request that appears in several customer conversations. Then inspect what survives the move from raw feedback to a product decision and back to the requester.
Canny: when the board itself should be part of the workflow
Canny starts with a public board where customers can suggest and vote on ideas. A team can also limit a board to chosen customers, which makes board visibility a real setup decision rather than an afterthought. Its portal feedback can connect to internal ideas and remain synchronized. That combination is useful to test when customer-facing discussion and internal planning need distinct spaces. 1 1 1
On the prioritization side, Canny describes custom scores that balance revenue and demand against effort. Its roadmap page also says a request can carry ARR, opportunity value and churn-risk context. The Salesforce integration lets a user search and create Canny posts from the CRM and link potential revenue opportunities. Those are concrete hooks for bringing a sales request into product review. They do not, by themselves, prove that a revenue-weighted score is the right decision rule for your team. 2 2 3 3
Where Canny falls short
The visible board is a choice to govern. Canny supports both public and restricted boards, so test how much of the request, customer identity and roadmap status should be exposed to each audience. A vote total shows support on the board, while Canny's custom score can weigh revenue and effort; the team still has to decide which signal should break a tie. This is a workflow tradeoff inferred from Canny's documented controls, not a measured product limitation. 1 1 2
Migration difficulty
Bring a small set of existing requests and map each one to a Canny idea, its customer record and its status. Test a Salesforce-originated request, then verify that the corresponding portal and internal idea show the intended relationship. Finally, change a request status and confirm who receives the update. These checks follow Canny's documented Salesforce posting, idea synchronization and voter notification paths. 3 1 1
Productboard: when feedback needs a formal scoring model
Productboard's customer-insights workflow centers requests and feedback, then lets teams triage incoming items and link useful insights to feature ideas. Customer importance scores can surface frequently requested features. That creates a path from scattered feedback to a feature record, but the feature record still needs a decision rule before it becomes roadmap work. 4 4 4
For that decision, Productboard documents weighted scores tied to strategic drivers and an interactive value-versus-effort matrix. The combination makes it possible to ask two different questions: how closely does an idea match strategic criteria, and what effort does it require relative to value? Productboard also says Salesforce accounts and opportunities can sync into the product to segment feedback and quantify deal impact. Use a real opportunity in the evaluation so the team can inspect how sales context enters the feature discussion. 5 5 6
Productboard's Portal update flow can email people who requested a feature and people whose submitted insight was linked to it. That matters when feedback came from both a public request surface and internal customer conversations. Verify the recipient list with a test feature rather than assuming every related contact will hear from the team. 7
Where Productboard falls short
Weighted drivers and a value-effort view give a team multiple ways to rank the same feature. That creates a governance question: who sets the weights, and when can customer importance or opportunity context override them? Productboard documents each of these inputs, but the vendor pages do not establish one universal formula. Treat the scoring model as a decision to configure and review, not as an automatic verdict. 4 5 5 6
Migration difficulty
Take several requests that currently live in different systems. Check whether Productboard can preserve their source, customer and feature association through triage. Then connect a sample Salesforce account and opportunity, test the chosen strategic weights, and send a Portal update to a test requester. These steps exercise the documented paths for insight linking, CRM sync, prioritization and follow-up. 4 6 5 7
UserVoice: when repeated themes need account context
UserVoice describes a central place for feedback and customer context, with generated insights traceable to underlying submissions. Its prioritization page says it detects recurring themes and can surface ideas across revenue, retention and demand. For a team with many versions of the same request, inspect whether a grouped theme still leaves the individual customer's reason visible. 8 8 9 9
UserVoice also documents analysis by customer type, plan or account. Its Salesforce connector setup asks the administrator to select a field that represents account revenue. The help page labels that connector a Discovery Premium feature and says it does not work with Sandbox or Developer instances. It also describes the connector as the single source of truth for account data, says other user and account trait sources will be disabled, and says it is updating its CRM sync to only sync contact and account data currently active in UserVoice. Those conditions make plan access, data-source ownership and sync scope part of the evaluation, alongside revenue-field mapping. 10 10 The product page explains intended ranking inputs; it does not validate the quality of any particular CRM field. 9 10 10 10 10 9
For follow-up, UserVoice allows a status update to be displayed below an idea on the web portal and offers an option to email the idea's supporters. Its help page labels public status updates a Discovery Pro and Premium feature. 11 The team can therefore test a complete loop with an idea that has multiple supporters. Check the message, the portal display and the supporter recipients with a test update. 11 11
Where UserVoice falls short
Theme detection can make a long request list easier to inspect, but it also makes traceability essential. UserVoice says each generated insight links to underlying submissions; verify that reviewers can get from a ranked idea back to the customer statements they need. Revenue and retention are ranking inputs, yet the team must decide how to handle requests whose account data is missing or disputed. This is an evaluation question derived from the documented signals, not a claim about measured accuracy. 8 9 10
Migration difficulty
Import or connect a representative set of customer requests and inspect the resulting themes. Before connecting Salesforce, confirm Discovery Premium access and review how existing account-data sources will be affected. UserVoice says other trait sources are disabled after setup and that it is still updating its CRM sync to cover only active contact and account data. 10 10 UserVoice says this connector does not work with Salesforce Sandbox or Developer instances, so arrange any connector evaluation around those stated limits. Then select the revenue field, inspect account analysis, and test a status update where the public-update feature is available. These steps follow the vendor's documented theme, connector and update paths. 9 10 10 10 10 11 11 11
Which feedback tool should you choose?
Choose Canny when a customer-facing board and a synchronized internal idea record are central to the process. Its documented Salesforce posting and voter status notice make the intake-to-update path particularly concrete. 1 1 3 1
Choose Productboard when product managers need to connect triaged insights to features, apply weighted strategic criteria, and inspect value against effort. Add a Salesforce opportunity to the trial if sales requests regularly influence roadmap discussions. 4 5 5 6
Choose UserVoice when recurring themes across submissions and account-level analysis are the first problems to solve. Test whether the trace back to original submissions is sufficient for reviewers, then test the status-update route to supporters. 8 9 9 11
The best trial is a shared set of requests and a written scoring rule. Ask each vendor to show who can submit, how a request is associated with an account, what evidence a reviewer sees, what changes a priority, and how the original requester learns what happened. Those questions compare the actual workflows described above without treating vendor descriptions as proof of results.
