Documint vs Formstack Documents vs S-Docs

Where CRM data becomes a document.

Verified 12 Oct 20267 min read

The short answer

The central choice is where a CRM record becomes a finished document. Documint describes a visual builder with dynamic fields, loops, and conditional sections, and its Salesforce page points to Zapier or Make for that connection. Formstack Documents documents Salesforce field mapping, several template formats, routing, and delivery integrations. S-Docs builds templates in Salesforce and merges records there, but its documentation says full automation requires Unlimited Edition and additional fees. The right pilot is the one that can turn your actual record, related items, and approval-ready wording into the correct output.

  • Start with Documint if the design team wants a visual template, and test the Salesforce connection through the automation service your team already governs. 12
  • Start with Formstack Documents if one process needs Salesforce mapping plus a choice of document templates and delivery destinations. 3
  • Start with S-Docs if the template should be built around Salesforce objects and related lists. Confirm the edition before planning background or batch generation. 45

This table summarizes vendor documentation, not tested behavior in your org. A document can fail because a field is blank, the related item list has several rows, or a rule picks the wrong clause. Use one realistic record with each of those conditions. Compare the rendered file and where it lands, not just a template editor demo. 1 3 4

Documint: when the template is the main work

Documint's visual designer is the clearest place to start if the task is laying out a document from structured data. Variables pull information into the template, looping creates repeating sections, and conditional rules include or exclude sections. Those capabilities make a useful test case: one account with one line item, another with several, and a third whose record should omit a clause. Its previewer lets the team inspect sample output before finalizing the template. 1

For a Salesforce workflow, do not assume the document engine sits inside the CRM. Documint's own Salesforce page names Zapier or Make as the connection and says Salesforce fields can map into a Documint template. It also describes record updates as a possible trigger. In a pilot, list the exact fields crossing that connection, test a changed record, and verify the finished document carries the new value. That is an evaluation method, not a claim that every Salesforce configuration will work automatically. 2

Where Documint falls short for this decision

The cited Salesforce route adds a connection that your team must configure and maintain. If your requirement is to keep template authoring, record access, generation, and output handling inside Salesforce, test whether that route fits your security and administration rules. Documint also documents dynamic filenames, which can help distinguish generated files, but a filename does not prove the destination record received the correct attachment. Check the generated file and its destination separately. 2 1

Migration difficulty

Start by inventorying every placeholder in one existing document and the Salesforce field that should populate it. Then identify arrays such as product lines that need loops and every condition that changes a section. Build a sample template, preview records with missing and multiple values, and only then connect the update trigger. The checklist follows Documint's documented variables, loops, conditional sections, and previewer. 12

Formstack Documents: when mapping and delivery both matter

Formstack's guide gives a more explicit path from Salesforce data to the finished file. It lists its own builder alongside fillable PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel options. Merge fields define the data-driven parts; a mapping connects those fields to Salesforce primary and child objects. The same guide names buttons, Flow, and form fills as ways to initiate a merge. This offers several configurations to test, but each adds a decision about who can start a document and which data they can access. 3

Conditional rules and loops handle content inside a template. Data Routing answers a different question: which template should be used for a given data-driven choice. For example, a team with two jurisdiction-specific document versions should test whether the routing decision picks the intended version before debating fonts. Inspect the source record, selected template, and completed file together. Formstack's guide documents both types of logic, but it does not validate your specific rule. 3

Where Formstack Documents falls short for this decision

The output destination deserves a separate design decision. Formstack calls deliveries integrations for where a merged document goes, and its guide states that Documents by itself does not store merged outputs. If your team expects a permanent file on the CRM record, prove the selected delivery creates it and make retention responsibility explicit. Avoid treating a successful merge as proof that the file was saved where the next person will look. 3

Migration difficulty

Choose one representative document format, map each field to a Salesforce primary or child object, and reproduce any current conditional clause or repeating row. Next, test both a button-driven merge and the intended automated trigger if you need one. Finish by retrieving the file from the destination, because the delivery is part of the workflow. This sequence is an editorial test plan based on the vendor's documented template, mapping, trigger, and delivery choices. 3

S-Docs: when the document starts inside Salesforce

S-Docs documents an editor for building templates directly within Salesforce. Every template relates to a standard or custom base object, and merge fields can draw from that object and related objects. Its related-list support can make a dynamic table with one record per row. Those details make it worth testing against an opportunity with several products or an account with several related contacts, provided the chosen template format supports the data structure you need. 4

The S-Docs editor lists PDF, DOC, HTML, and CSV among its output formats. It also supports rules that show or hide data, sections, or pages. Runtime prompts can collect user input during generation, with text, date, checkbox, and related-list prompt types documented. If a rep must choose an option that is absent from the CRM record, test whether a prompt is the right controlled input or whether the data belongs on the record first. 46

Where S-Docs falls short for this decision

Its manual path starts from an S-Docs button on a Salesforce record. Background generation is a separate commercial question: S-Docs says full document automation is available only to Unlimited Edition customers and carries additional fees. The same condition appears for full batch generation. Ask for the edition and entitlement that cover the exact trigger and volume you plan to use; do not infer those capabilities from a generic feature list. 5

Migration difficulty

Select the base Salesforce object for the template, map the fields and related lists, then add conditional sections and any runtime input. Run the manual button path first. If the target workflow requires background generation, test the S-Doc Job path with Flow or Apex and confirm the applicable edition. That order separates document correctness from trigger setup and commercial entitlement. 4 5

4 checks before choosing

First, use the same CRM record for all three pilots. Include an ordinary value, an empty optional field, and several related rows. Second, list the exact document variants and the rule that selects each one. Third, inspect the finished file at its destination, including the owner who can retrieve it. Fourth, write down the trigger and edition or integration that makes it possible. These are proposed checks drawn from the documented mapping, logic, delivery, and automation differences, not measured rankings. 12 3 45

FAQ

Can Documint populate a document from Salesforce fields?
Documint says Salesforce fields can be mapped into a template and names Zapier or Make as the Salesforce connection. Test the exact record fields you need. 2
Can Formstack choose among templates using record data?
Its guide describes Data Routing as logic for selecting the template based on a data-driven choice. Test each branch with a sample record. 3
Does S-Docs need a Salesforce record to start a template?
S-Docs says each template relates to a standard or custom Salesforce object, and its manual generation path starts with a button on an object record. 4 5
Is full S-Docs automation included by default?
Its documentation says full document automation is limited to Unlimited Edition and additional fees apply. Confirm the edition before planning a background generation workflow. 5

How we researched this

We read six original Documint, Formstack, and S-Docs product or help pages on October 12, 2026 and saved a separate dated snapshot for each. The comparison records vendor-described capabilities and proposes a pilot to test them. It does not claim a measured winner or a price comparison.
